Empowering Himalayan Communities Through Tourism
Deeply embedded in Himalayan culture, history and heritage, trekking tourism is crucial to the livelihoods of many communities across Nepal and Bhutan. Local teahouses employ staff from nearby villages, support farmers who supply organic produce, and provide English lessons and educational support to families along the trails.
The growth in Himalayan trekking has fuelled demand for authentic experiences. However, this has raised concerns about sustainability and the long-term wellbeing of local communities. It is often difficult for travellers to assess the true social impact of the experiences they choose.
As part of Yatrasansar's commitment to providing sustainable tourism experiences, we have developed a community assessment framework in consultation with local village councils, ensuring a fair share of tourism revenue stays in the hands of mountain communities.
